Traditional fashion and accessory manufacturing operates on incredibly wasteful layouts. During the pattern-cutting phase alone, leather goods makers routinely waste between 25% to 60%[1] of leather in the production process.
Compounding this issue, over 90% of global leather is chrome-tanned[2]. While fast and inexpensive to produce, chrome-tanned leather leaves behind a heavy heavy-metal footprint. Because it is saturated with chromium salts, these scraps resist natural decomposition in landfills—taking decades to break down—and run the risk of leaching toxic chemicals into surrounding soil and water systems[2]. That's where we step in through our circular process, ensuring that all leather purchased will be used, diverting them from landfills into purposeful design.
Reducing waste is only half our equation. On a societal level, another equally important issue exists in employment: standard working arrangements often restrict individuals managing non-traditional paths or personal responsibilities.
We look beyond the rigid constraints of the 9-to-6 workday. Squarefoot Leather restructures production into flexible, project-based income for stay-at-home mothers, ex-offenders, elders - people from all walks of life - as freelance artisans. We offer those who require flexible hours a clear path to build technical skills, achieve financial independence, and craft their own career paths.
We address environmental waste and labor barriers simultaneously through our company. Squarefoot Leather re-engineers the traditional crafting process to improve accessibility, from both the consumer's perspective (financially) and producer's perspective (socially). Additionally, all workshops are held at the Avant-Garde Art Space, Singapore's first pet-friendly art studio in order to widen accessiblity of the arts for pawrents to enjoy as a family.
Squarefoot Leather affirms that only by removing barriers to entry can human capability be fully unlocked. We empower individuals to transform premium industrial remnants into corporate goods and custom pieces, proving that practical sustainability goes hand in hand with social equity.
